About Screw Machine Products
Screw machine products are turned parts created in
high volumes on a screw machine. Basically, a screw machine, its cutting
methods like a highly automated lathe, turns/faces the rod of material,
parts it off and advances the rod for the next part. Bar stock is gripped
by a spindle’s spring collet, which rotates the stock. The automatic
movement, depth and duration of all cuts are controlled by cams. The
turret automatically positions each tool. Lever-operated cross slides
carry the tools at right angles to the spindle. The main drive shaft
of a screw machine provides power to the machine bed’s lead work
shaft and controls the two front cam shafts. The machine motor, located
at the base of the machine, is the central power source for all operations
and will vary in horsepower, depending on the size of the machine, speed
and stock to be machined. Screw machines are equipped with a mechanical
safety clutch that will disengage to stop the main drive shaft, in the
event of overloading or jamming, in order to protect the operating mechanisms.
Automatic screw machines can be single- or multi-spindled. The Swiss
screw machine, so named because it originated in Switzerland, feeds the
bar stock through the cutting cycle. Another type of single-spindled
machine rotates the work in a fixed position, which is typically heavier
than that produced by Swiss screw machines. Multi-spindled screw machines
can handle from four to twelve bars at a time. The stacked type is like
four machines in one, as it can produce four complete pieces during one
machining cycle. The spindles of an indexing type multi-spindled screw
machine progressively cut the bar stock, making no identical cuts. The
multiple-spindle chucking machine is similar to that of a multi-spindled
automatic screw machine, except it is semi-automatic. Instead of bar
stock, these machines are used for castings or forgings.
Screw machine product manufacturers provide integral components of a
variety of products in the automotive, agricultural, medical, electronic
and recreational industries. Screw machine products are used to form
turned parts for numerous computer products, hardware and tools, lawn
and garden equipment and an endless array of other industrial products.
Turned parts include fittings, screws, bolts, pins, rivets, fasteners,
studs and bushings. Cost effectiveness, rapid production and close tolerances
for large volumes of parts are a few advantages of screw machine product
manufacturers. In addition, a wide variety of metals can be turned, including
stainless steel, brass, titanium and aluminum. Certain plastics can also
be used in the production of screw machine parts.
When selecting screw machine product manufacturers, it is important to
determine production needs. The type of material is a factor, as certain
materials (e.g. steel) require more power than others, such as aluminum.
The greater the desired spindle speed, the higher the horsepower required.
Typically, a machine with maximum flexibility will cover all needs, depending
on the range of work that is done in-house. However, if floor space is
limited, attachments may be added to change a screw machine into a fully-automatic,
multi-phase machine. These attachments help to economize space and to
reduce the cost of per unit of output.

Types of Screw Machine Products
- are complex parts that are often cylindrical and/or threaded.
Automatic screw machines produce these parts at high speeds.
- are produced to extremely close tolerances,
which is particularly useful when producing large volumes of turned
parts. Close tolerances are achieved through the use of high-grade metals
and close inspections during production stages.
- are used in a variety of applications in the medical,
scientific and pharmaceutical industries. Precision medical components
include spinal implants, screws and dental implants.
- are usually cylindrical and threaded products.
- are manufactured by screw machines.
- is a manufacturing process that can turn out several identical products at the same time.
- provide superior corrosion and chemical resistance.
Stainless steel screw machine products are useful in industrial applications
in which they will be exposed to temperature extremes, moisture and
chemicals.
- are produced to very close tolerances. Swiss screw machines
are often used in the production of small, complex parts.
- is a fastening bar with a twisted grove along its length.
-
are parts with extremely tight tolerances that are formed by loading
bar stock into a screw machine and then machining the parts as the bar
is fed through the machine. The vast majority of turned parts are formed
by this process.
